Balloons and Blimps are lighter-than-air aircraft, which float in the sky. Inside the balloon compartment is a lighter-than-air gas such as helium or hydrogen. Due to the fact that hydrogen is lighter than air and the combinations of gases including oxygen in the atmosphere, the hydrogen wishes to rise and in doing so floats the balloon upward. By heating the gas inside the gas expands and fills up all the interior cavity of the balloon, simulating higher volumes.I propose we stick smart dust inside balloons and blimps which will hold the heat temperature inside for longer and well as coating ....

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Technology is the wave of the future for many things, not just military operations. We are using UAVs for border patrol, wildfire fighting, search and rescue and even atmospheric weather observation and scientific trend analysis. It is safe to say that UAVs will be around for a long time and the commercial applications are virtually unlimited.Recently we have had some problems with UAVs and their power plants. In fact there have been in-flight power failures and dead stick autonomous gliding to land. A Global Hawk, which had an engine quit did just that.http://www.shephard.co.uk/UVOnline/Default.aspx?Action=-187126550&ID=d78fb81e-a20f-4cfa-b53c-3edc109bc7e4There have been some who ....

Flying is often a persons greatest fear. With the recent Air France crash at the Toronto Pearson Airport, some fliers stress may be at an all-time high. However, it is possible to practice stress management solutions while flying. Hamilton-based Mark McGregor, who is a stress management trainer and consultant, believes that we should use our HEADS (Humour, Exercise, Avoid, Delegate, Seek) to manage our flying stress. Mark comments, Some air passengers unnecessarily worry and become overwhelmed when traveling on airplanes which causes increased personal stress. Its not enjoyable for themselves or the people they travel with. Chances are you will ....

The recent bankruptcy announcements for Northwest and Delta Airlines has sent a shudder through the aviation industry as expected job cuts loom and possible further bankruptcy filings are considered. These are not good days for many carriers as high legacy costs, pricey jet fuel, and inefficient management practices have worked together to bring down some of the bigger names out there. Fortunately, all is not bleak in the industry and, in fact, many jobs are being created for the opportunistic person. Knowing where to look can present a challenge, but finding the right job can be a rewarding experience. Lets ....

Many of the Nations Largest Airports use a lot of energy and when there is a black out chaos ensues. Luckily our biggest and busiest airports in the United States have back-up power for safety. If the power goes out on the grid the back-up power comes on within seconds. Unfortunately with all the energy that modern airports use, not all uses can be supported with back up power, obviously runway lights, security and safety comes first. But if we can reduce the power consumption of aviation uses such as runway and taxi lights, we can use that savings for ....

When flying a hot air balloon, you must be prepared for anything and play it safe. You do not have the control in a lighter-than-air aircraft that you would in a normal airplane. It can be very dangerous indeed. There is nothing more peaceful than to watch the sunset in a hot air balloon and then, as the air cools slowly sink back to Earth in your pre-designated spot. Unfortunately all that depends on the weather doesnt it.If you are going to do this it pays to have some good lighting, however the lighting you take up with you needs ....

When flying a high-performance sleek aircraft often it is problematic getting the aircraft slowed down. Many super high performance aircraft and gliders have spoilers or speed brakes to help slow them down for landing by increasing drag. For smaller high performance Experimental Composite Aircraft, I propose using this fact to help us power up LED Landing Lights.I propose we use make a small mechanical flutter energy generator to absorb the vibrations to power up the landing lights using electromagnetic induction technology to charge a capacitor instead of the headlights working off a battery. Currently there are some nifty micro-flashlights being ....

If youre a budget traveler, chartered planes will cross your travel planning path at some point in time. The quality of charter flights can be both good and bad.During certain times of the year, flying to a particular location can be very expensive. One way to beat the expense is to book a seat on a charter flight. I did this very thing once, booking a round trip ticket to Europe during the high season. The seat set me back $400, a savings of about $350 at the time. The chartered flight had good and bad points. I dont want to ....

Sound waves are like ripples in a pond that radiate around the object. An aeroplane travelling at sub-sonic speed will be travelling behind the sound that it has emitted. When the aeroplane reaches the exact speed of sound, the sound it is producing will accompany it on its journey. This can be very dangerous. Why? Because while it is travelling at the speed of sound, there will be a continuous build up of sound around the aircraft. As new sounds are produced, the aircraft will fly along with those new sounds - and so on. Eventually, the racket will break ....

During inclement weather aviation becomes much more serious. When you are flying in bad weather you must rely on your instruments instead of looking outside. During intensive storms it is possible to be hit with lightning, which could instantly fry all your electronic equipment. If you cannot see and have no instruments you could easily become disoriented and feel the effects of vertigo. So many of these new instruments are flat panel displays with LED panels. Therefore the instrument panel containing the essentials could be run off the rumble of the engine and the bumpy-ness of the air from the bad ....
