On a camping trip in October 1987, I woke to find a snow-laden bough hanging dangerously over my tent. New York's Hudson Valley typically does not get a foot of snow during leaf season. I had the supplies I needed to get back home safely, but that adventure motivated me to learn more about survival. What if I had been caught in a winter storm and unable to get out?Back when I was seeking knowledge on how to make tools from what I could find on the trail, there were few people teaching what wanted to learn. ....

In the Northeast US, there are two species of ticks.Wood ticks are large and while annoying, do not cause illness. Deer ticks, barely visible to the naked eye, were introduced to the Northeast United States 30 years ago and carry Lyme disease. These microscopic intruders have impacted the outdoors experience almost as much as sprawl. If I had a nickel for every person who told me that they now limit their outdoor activities to winter to avoid ticks, I'd be a billionaire.I don't leave home without my pre-trek preparation, which includes making myself lethal to ticks. So what's my secret?A derivative ....

Let me guess. You're getting that restless feeling. It's been a long, hot summer already, and OOPS! Here it is mid July and summer will be over before we can invite the in-laws over for the traditional summer barbeque. Let's get out of this house, out of this neighborhood, and let's take a vacation! But where? Let's see... There's always the beach. Yeh, the beach with the big crowds, the glaring sun, the gritty sand. And I do get tired really fast just lying around in the sun or the shade with an occasional ....

The afternoons are by far the best time of day in Namibia. Sipping a cool drink as the sun sits low in the African sky, bleeding the harsh desert hues into soft pastels. As the still, evening air cools from the heat of the day, the sky becomes awash with an infinite spray of stars.Perhaps not as well known as some of its African neighbors, Namibia is a gem for those in search of wildlife and wilderness.Inhabited since the dawn of time the local people, plants and animals have come a long way, adapting in remarkable and unique ways to ....

Wild animal attacks are not common. Dogs that live among us are a much more common danger. But there is something about being attacked by a wild animal that is especially disturbing. Of course, we want to avoid this nightmare, and if unavoidable, we want to survive it. Some tips on doing both follow.Moose AttacksMore common than bear attacks, moose attacks can be just as dangerous. A bull moose can weigh over 1500 pounds.
