Sailing is an activity that very few people are familiar with. There are many reasons for this. Firstly, generally human beings have an inherent fear of the seas. This may stems from previous phobias or plain ignorance. Although the sea is full of colorful fauna and creatures, many still fear the unknowns leering in the seas. The gruesome scenes in movies like the Jaws one to three disproportionately magnify this fear.Secondly, many also fear the bottomless depths of the seas. Today's modern mariner appears, on the surface, to be better equipped than the small legion of yesteryear's voyagers. Of course, neither Christopher Columbus, Joshua Slocum nor I had access to a GPS when we were plying the seven seas - a sextant pretty much told us where we were. While a GPS, Sat/Nav, radar, loran, VHF radio, ham radio, radio receiver, and solar panels are probably nice to have, there are two pieces of equipment that I discovered in my extensive wanderings that are indispensable. When I was young, I had a keen interest in swimming. In the 1965 in my primary school graduating years, I started to learn swimming. However, there was no coaches (my family could not afford one) to teach the basics. Well, I learnt from other swimmers in the public swimming pools. I merely mimic other swimmers who look like they were swimming correctly. I went to the National Library and laid my hands on all books related to swimming. Often people ask what my favorite destination was in our sailboat travels. After twenty-five years, I still never vacillate. Why did I love the archipelago of S.E. Alaska so? We had to endure a 18 hour boat trip from Incheon port to Qingdao with no other westerners on board. Our Korean friends had dropped us to the port and when they saw the people wed be sharing the room with they made sure we upgraded to a private room instead of a dorm room, which when we started to queue to board the vessel, realised that was a wise move.
