Governors’ Luxury Camp - Governors’ Camp Best Masai Mara Camp
May 8th, 2008This was the first tented camp to be established in the Masai Mara National Reserve. Main Governors, as it is sometimes called, first opened in 1972 on the site of teddy Roosevelts Mara camp. It is now one of the best known camps in the Mara, and especially popular with American Clients.
Although Governors camp is also one of the largest camps, you never see more than a few tents at a time. Amazingly enough, as many as 38 green tents are sited along the high banks of the looping Mara River. Tall old trees, clipped green lawns, and the quiet river give everything a feeling of tranquility. You can watch and listen to birds; you can even see larger animals wander into camp. It is quite possible to wake up to the sound of hippos feeding on grass outside your tent.
The reception area is built of natural stone and features a small museum showing mounted photographs and bronze sculptures of wildlife.
The tented bar/lounge, open on three sides, is especially inviting with its bar built of logs. Nearby, there is a cleared area overlooking the river where breakfast and lunch buffets are served when the weather is fine.
Fine ala cate dinners are served by candle light in the dining tent, which seems intimate and private, though it can seat 100. The meal ends with the arrival of local Masai musicians or dancers who then draw you outside to the traditional camp fire.

Governors main camp and Paradise camp are the best of in their type of tented camps in the Mara. Governors camps have been in the Mara for the longest time and they have the best practice in responsible tourism. The camps strive to conserve their immediate environment and in reducing the impacts of their tourists on the environments.
The lack of electricity and crude gravity showers is not meant to inconvenience you but to make you feel as basic yet comfortable as possible. Talk of an escape from civilization-with few comforts snicked in the camp just for you.
